MAGICON,
Or the secret system of a Society of unknown Philosophers

The Theosophist:

Such is the title of an old book, - printed in the German language in the year A. D. 1784, and published in the city of Leipzig by one who called himself "An Unknown of the Quadrilateral Light".

Commentary on the above:

The author of MAGICON is Johann Fredrick Kleuker (1749 - 1820), a resident of the city of Münster, who was intiated to Martinism by Franz von Bader (a Rosa crecenda ) according to the rite of the Strict Observance, rectified by J-B. Willermoz.

The Theosophist:

The unknown editors of this work were evidently a number of Theosophists in Paris, and must have been initiates.

Commentary on the above:

The editors are not unknow, nor are they French. J.F. Kleuker wrote the book in German, and it was published in Münster, where at least a dozen of Martinists were residing at the time. It was probably sponsered by a Cedro Libani, the Landgrave Christian von Hesse-Darmstadt. Two copies of the book are know to have survived: one in the Library of the "Store" Lodge of Denmark [Masonic Grand Lodge of Denmark], in Copenhagen, the other in the National Library of Austria in Vienna [former library of the Habsburg royal family]. The statement concerning their status is vague but correct. At least three prominent Reaux-Croix lived in the area.

The Theosophist:

Martinez was born about 1700 in Portugal, of a Musulman mother and a Portuguese father. Proficient in the Kabala and the secret sciences, he travelled far and wide, and getting initiated in the East he came to Paris in 1768, and soon after founded several Masonic Lodges, called Martinistic, and died finally in St. Domingo in 1779.

Commentary on the above:

This was the accepted version of the facts concerning Martinez' biography at the time. Recent discovery confirm his place of birth in Grenoble, France, in a Roman Catholic family, and with a French education. He succeeded to his father and founded several Masonic Lodges, with the authority of a Warrant issued by the King of England, before establishing his own movement: "L'Ordre des Elus-Cohen de l'Univers". He left for the island of San Domingo to collect an inheritence on May 5th 1772. He died there on September 20, 1774 and was burried the next day. The location of his grave has been forgotten.
